Global Connections

I am currently a consultant to the Advisory Committee on Agricultural Resilience in Nigeria, charged by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to research and recommend methods for maintaining agricultural resilience in the face of climate change. As the Senior Editor and Media Adviser, I helped to produce the Launch Report (above). It provides highly scientific information and recommendations yet one of the key populations intended to benefit from the project is rural farmers. My role is to develop communication strategies that target a wide range of stakeholders ranging from high-level government officials to rural farmers using appropriate communication methods for the culture, region, and audience.

In 2010, Pearson published my chapter, "Global Media and News: A Guide to Decoding and Analyzing Information" in Understanding the Global Experience: Becoming a Responsible World Citizen. This book is being used at Elon University for introductory global studies courses as well as at other universities across the country. (Available at Amazon)

Kiva
I used Kiva as a teaching tool to demonstrate to students that we can empower people to make their lives better through their own entrepreneurship by making them small loans. Students volunteered to raise funds and then made loans that became funds for perpetual loans.  Our team is called U r us and we r u. You can see the total amount of money loaned to date is more than $18,000I invite you to become a member of our team!

In the Summer 2007, I served as a visiting professor. Below are some photos from the experience.

Traditional Wedding
I have used this video of my relatives' traditional marriage ceremony in Nigeria in my Global Studies classes to highlight the similarities and differences in cultural practices.  Stories like this may, at first appear different, but strike a chord of universality that crosses cultures.
